Laurence Holden (Hambidge Fellow: 1984-1999) will lead a forest walk with poetry to Barker’s Creek Mill and back - reading from his own poems and others (including Mary Hambidge) about the creative powers in nature that are evoked by this special creative sanctuary that is the Hambidge Center.
Joseph Peragine is presenting a large inflatable sculpture titled “Breathing Tank.” Breathing Tank is part of a body of work titled Hell On Wheels (2003-06), which centered on the WWII era Sherman Tank. The earliest works in the series were watercolors done on location in Normandy, France. The body of work grew into a comprehensive investigation of the tank as an object, symbol and metaphor. Though outwardly menacing and powerful, the Sherman Tank proved to be inadequate in firepower and armor compared to its German counterparts. For those that occupied the tanks in battle it could become a deathtrap. This dichotomy, the contradiction between image and reality, power and impotence, is a thread that runs through all the work in this series. This particular piece presents the tank at full scale with guns at the ready. However, the timer that governs the airflow inflates and deflates the tank to simulate breathing, giving the work the look of a large brooding animal.
Peragine currently lives and works in Atlanta. He is an Associate Professor in the Ernest G. Welch School of Art ad Design at Georgia State University.
On one level, the video installation “Unless & Until” tells the story of Unless and Until, two creatures of indeterminate gender and rich acquaintance, who are returning to the pleasures of domestic existence, while attempting to remember the details of a fantastical journey they have largely forgotten. On another level, the project is a celebration of the act of creation and the experience of revelation in ordinary life.
For Team UnUn (JS van Buskirk, James R. Calrson, Matt Gilbert & Julie Püttgen), the work develops and unfolds out of the creative process. Julie Püttgen writes, “We start from found information and imperfect understanding, then elaborate a world. The painter begins with chaotic watercolor washes, and creates pictorial space. The writer finds enigmatic paintings, and creates a narrative. The composer is given lyric text, and creates melody. The animator joins all of the above into a new whole. Each of these acts is a reflection of our capacity to learn from the unfolding stories of our lives.” Members of the group collaborated on this project at Hambidge.

Hambidge Fellows Stephanie Smith and Terri Dilling of the Atlanta Printmakers Studio will present PrintSpin, an installation of screen-printed pinwheels displayed on the Hambidge lawn. During the festival the artists will demonstrate the technique and visitors will be able to try their hand at screenprinting and make their own pinwheel. The PrintSpin project was conceived by Carol Pulin of the American Print Alliance as a print and paper project that takes a light-hearted look at wind energy, engaging the public by showcasing printmaking techniques and three-dimensional design.
Stephanie Smith lives in Decatur, Ga, is a Lecturer in the Art Department at the University of West Georgia and creates expressive, figurative linocuts. Terri Dilling is an Atlanta-based artist who combines painting and printmaking techniques, using imagery inspired by nature, science and architecture.
Michael Radyk presents four installations from a new series of woven wall pieces inspired by the lingering light and the sensorial moments found in nature, half darkened rooms and the landscape in places. Two of the site-specific installations were originally executed during a Hambidge residency in May and the other two are new works, using the Hambidge landscape and architecture as backdrops for these exquisitely woven textiles.
Michael Radyk is an artist and designer whose woven textiles have been exhibited throughout the United States. His work is greatly influenced by the light and color of the places he has lived and visited. Being relatively new to Georgia, he is fascinated by the beautiful light, color and glow of the mornings and evenings. Michael was a visiting professor at the University of Georgia in Athens from 2008-2010.
